The Cover Crop Program provides funding to help maintain a living vegetative cover on the ground between cropping cycles. This program is available to landowners and producers who own or operate agricultural land in Dane County that meet the eligibility requirements below.
Cover crops are typically planted in the fall after crops are harvested. They maintain a living vegetative cover on the ground which helps prevent erosion, build soil health, and reduce runoff. Annual cereal rye is a popular cover crop because it grows in the fall, survives winter, and grows again in the spring. There are numerous cover crop types and options for mixes as well depending on the landowner’s or operator’s goals and priorities.
Applicants will work with staff to determine if this program is a good fit for their operation and goals. Program participation is contingent on available funding.
Through this program and based on available funds, the current rates are:
Each contract may enroll up to 200 acres.
In order to be eligible for this program, the landowner must meet the following requirements:
Inquiries for cost-share funding are taken throughout the year. The program is contingent on available funds and county budgets. During the term of the cost-share contract, staff may conduct on-site verification of the practices.
