MADISON – Dane County Executive Melissa Agard today visited the Jenni & Kyle Preserve to highlight $350,000 in accessibility improvements included in her 2026 Executive Budget. The investment will enhance trails, piers, restrooms, and other infrastructure at the beloved county park, ensuring it remains a model for inclusive outdoor recreation for people of all ages and abilities.

“The Jenni & Kyle Preserve isn’t just another park—it’s a place built on love, inclusion, and the belief that everyone deserves access to the joy of the outdoors,” said County Executive Agard. “When we invest in accessibility, we’re investing in belonging, opportunity, and dignity. These improvements will help more people experience the beauty and freedom that come with being in nature.”

The Jenni & Kyle Preserve was created in 1989 through a donation from Harvey and Patricia Wilmeth in memory of their grandchildren, Jenni and Kyle, who both passed away at the age of four from a degenerative neurological disorder. The family’s gift established a park designed specifically for children and individuals with disabilities—a living legacy that ensures everyone can enjoy the outdoors without barriers.

The preserve features accessible fishing and picnic areas, paved nature trails, wheelchair swings, and a shelter building around two spring-fed ponds stocked with trout and panfish. Each element was intentionally designed to make nature accessible, safe, and welcoming for all.

“Accessibility should never be an afterthought—it should be built into the foundation of everything we do,” Agard added. “From our parks and trails to our buildings and public services, we’re working to make Dane County the most inclusive and welcoming community in Wisconsin.”

The planned improvements are part of Agard’s 2026 Executive Budget, which maintains essential county services while investing in community well-being, accessibility, and sustainability. The County Board will take up the 2026 budget in November.
